In the years since then we’ve all- adapted and evolved as consumers and corporations must. We are all perpetually available. I now speak for an ‘unlimited’ amount of minutes daily with no surcharge, wherever I may find myself. More likely then not, I (along with the, â€Å"44% of us who report using our smartphones to listen to music in a typical week†) might instead be texting while streaming a movie or song or perhaps downloading files to review on the small computer (aka smart phone) I carry around in my pocket. According to Neilson’s annual study of music listeners, â€Å"91% of the national population listens to music, spending more than 24 hours each week tuning into their favorite tunes.† (cite) We listen to music and we continue to listen to a lot of it. While Americans streamed more than 164 billion on-demand tracks across audio and video platforms in 2014, they streamed 135 billion in the first half of 2015 alone – up more than 90% from the same period last year. The advance of the internet has affected almost every industry and the music business is no exception. Imagine this: a young adult vanishes without a trace to venture off into the wild and â€Å"discover† himself. With the bearings of a modern-day bildungsroman, such a story may not seem uncommon; after all, young adult novels and films have both glorified and censured the youthful adventure tale, perpetuating an image of adolescents (particularly young males) as courageous yet foolhardy individuals who adamantly desire self-discovery. Such depictions may not be far from reality, as demonstrated by the story of Chris McCandless in Jon Krakauer’s non-fiction book Into the Wild. Krakauer presents a relatively objective account of 24-year-old McCandless’s brief sojourn in the Alaskan wilderness and the events leading to his death, offering opinions from individuals who criticized the young man’s arrogance and foolhardiness as well as those who extolled McCandless as a noble, brave hero. To establish an extreme and unyielding stance on Chris McCandless – viewing him as either a righteous idealist or an inexperienced dunderhead – would disregard McCandless’s nuanced personality and his sensitive familial circumstances. Would this opinion change under the hypothetical assumption that needed production facilities for the current line of powdered detergents were at 55 percent of capacity and expected to grow at a rate 20 percent a year and maximum production capacity was 100 percent? What would be the present value of this cash flow given the fact that the currently proposed new plant would involve cash outflows of $5 million in three years (assuming that acceptance of the Blast project would not affect the size of the proposed outlay, only the timing, and that the new plant and facilities would be operable indefinitely). (Hint: Assume that the introduction of Blast would only move the need for a new plant ahead by one year, that the cash outflow would remain at $5 million regardless of when incurred, and that the plant would operate indefinitely. In our opinion, the excess usage of production facilities and building would not be charge into Blast.
